Earthquake in Virginia

Today is August 24,2011 The Earthquake was felt in Virginia a scale of 5.8. If you have felt this after shock please let them know so they can add it to their map below.
I for one have not felt any of this today. I am however, interested in other and what they have to say about this earthquake. I live near Chicago, IL and was in an interview at 9:00 am today. I see on the map that close to or in Chicago, Illinois that others felt the after shock.
I normally do not watch the new because it is all bad news. I like to be optimistic and not pessimistic. The world and it’s horrible this and horrible that tends to get me down so I just refuse to “participate” in it. Although this is another case of the “oh my gosh, did that just really happen?” If you have a story to share please share it with me in the comments or better yet, why not post about it?!!
A 5.8 earthquake shook central Virginia this afternoon. It was felt in both Washington D.C. and New York.

HuffPost Green is working on a comprehensive map of where the earthquake was felt, based on news reports, your comments and tweets.

  1. We are all fine… didn’t feel a thing. Thankfully, no one was hurt… However, the hurricane is another story… Hope you are safe Jackie. Take care!

  2. It is good to know that no-one is hurt! I have never experienced an earthquake.

  3. All’s quiet here in western MA. We’ve had two earthquakes in the region in the past twenty years but not big ones. We’ve had a tornado recently, I think that I hate them most of all.

    • I do have tornado’s….too -we are helping a single mom and her son, so bar with me for one week, and pray for me, Security job possible on Friday. Thanks everyone…

  4. I am so happy that you are ok!! Daisy too. It is such a blessing for you all. I am horrified at reading more stories. I have done a lot of research on earthquakes and in Illinois we have a New Madrid fault line that may affect us one day soon. I am horrified of Tornado’s but an earthquake seems more devastating. I guess any natural disaster. We had two tornado’s we saw and almost were in This year, so that scared me! Thank you for sharing your story. Much Love to all of you.

    • Thanks Jackie. I agree that tornadoes are really scary. We’re bracing for Hurricane Irene now, which is supposed to hit us on Sunday. Let’s hope it veers out to sea!

  5. Oh yes, we most definitely felt it here in Central New Jersey. Daisy started barking at the back wall of the house about 2 seconds before it hit; then I heard what sounded like the wood beams in the walls splintering and a really weird rhythmic, rumbling “wooshing” sound that came again and again. I thought the furnace was about to explode or something - maybe some sort of high-pressure gas leak was flooding the walls. I looked outside and saw the bird feeder swinging wildly and the bird bath water was sloshing about like crazy. I grabbed Daisy and went outside - one of my neighbors said the police lines were packed but it was an earthquake. My cell phone wouldn’t work because the lines were overloaded. My daughter, whose office is an hour southwest within NJ, said her 4-story building was actually swaying and they were evacuated. Ultimately we had no damage, thank God, but it was really scary. I can’t imagine how horrible it must feel in an epicenter.
