Hello my name is Jackie Paulson and I was raised in an all Irish Catholic Jesuit home environment and went to Private schools. Growing up in a big family of seven children, I was told to obey my parents and do what I was “told.” I was told to listen to the teachers and all authority figures (all adults older than I). When I grew up I learned to despise all learning activities because they were associated with rigid authoritarian thinking. In the end, yes I obeyed AND did very well in schools. I hated to learn and memorize anything. When I grew up I rebelled for awhile; (that is for another story). Then I made up my own mind that I wanted to pay for my own college and attend and get all A’s. I did just that. I went into the Paralegal field and loved every class and gave 110%. It does make a difference when you pay for your own education. I did follow protocol in schools, and in the employment industry and what I find is that too many people are following a “system.” There is no creativity or independent thinking. This is where the world or corporations lack. This is why so many open their own businesses. I have never been one, to be told what to do. I am sure none of those reading this want to be told what to do! This is my rebellion in play. In my opinion, rules did not make me who I am today. It is important to follow them but not let the “systems” of today “take control of your life.”

Great post Jackie! I would have rebelled too if I were in your shoes. I am quite a tough one as well and don’t believe in these “society rules” and “beliefs”. We are all individuals and should accept each other as we are, not go around try changing every person we meet. We can only change ourselves and enjoy the journey of life. So, good for you hon! You have my vote!
*hugs*

Sometimes there is a need to challenge rules that are outdated or is simply not working for the common good. This is a process that an organization or system should undergo in order to move to the next level. The basic ingredients are to have an open communication and flexibility. Common goal is to have a win-win situation.
Great Post.
And Happy Holidays to you as well.
In spite of the way you were brought up with rules and regulations, you have come out on top Jackie, thanks to your perseverance and strong mindedness!
Sh-. Just typed half a long response and pushed the wrong button. All that wisdom lost. Guess no one wants my words of wisdom, but it is Shrinks Think Posting day, so here’s the short version.
Too Rigid a rule follower? Bet you know that one. Right Obssessive Compulsive Disorder. Have a niece that will clean your house for you if you don’t mind all your possessions being made to follow her rules.
Too Rigid a rule breaker? Ahhhh. You might not know that one. Oppositional Defiant if you break rules but do not engage in criminal activity. Conduct Disordered if you break laws and are not an adult. Anti-social Personality disordered if you break laws.
The key word is rigid in both.
Didn’t need to know that? Tough. Cranky Old Lady rigidly shares the leakages of her brain. Staying Strong Tip: Hit the middle, except when driving down a two way highway.
Rules and Systems are the most beautiful things in this life if they are designed to be productive, give life and give birth, to new and better systems. Rebellion against productive rules and syxtems would even rebel against machines and digital technologyeven against our very being.
Only let the rules be progressive, troubleshooting, forward looking as well as system sustaining. Systems and Rules are good. Anarchy and rebellion as well as rigidity and retrogression are disorder at both ends.
I went to Catholic university, Barry College in Miami Shores for MA religion. Those Jez priests are something else. I was trying to get 30 credit hours, not sit in a library with 2,000 years of books forever.
I see you started out a rule follower as did I!
Great post thanks. I really enjoyed it very much. You have excellent content on your blog.
