The Wizard of OZ and Archetypes

Dorothy has to seek out aspects of herself that she did not know she had

1. Courage

2. Intelligence

WHERE” Kansas

The story presents the challenges of survival that we all face on our own

YELLOW Brick ROADS of Life.

Judy Garland is DOROTHY is an Orphan Child - Why? Because she does not fit into the conventional tribe her consciousness is her own to develop from the beginning.

As the story opens, a cyclone or Tornado is approaching, which REPRESNTS the CHAOS that is the classic precursor toTRANSORMATION.

Dorothy tries to run to the storm cellar, but the –her (family, the tribe) did not hear her. She runs back into the house with her dog, TOTO

She bangs her head losing consciousness.

In symbolic, archetypal terms, a HOUSE represents the whole of the self, from the subconscious in the basement to the superego in the attic.

To be symbolically reconstituted.

Munchkins represent fragments of her.

1. Where am I?

2. How do I get home?

Go on a journey to an unknown destination.

Dorothy’s guardian is Toto, (everything), he is an extension of Dorothy; he is her INTUTION, her power animal.

Everything is always with you – just stay aware of what is going on.

Keep your attention in the present time.

1. Child

2. Victim

3. Prostitute-will tests you to see if you’re willing to sell your spiritual power for material gain of some sort.

4. Saboteur-Are you going to sabotage your personal growth for a little comfort or will your inner Saboteur alert you to danger in time to keep you on the Yellow Brick Road.

Her child says, “I’ve lost my way; I’ve got to get home.

The forces around her say, “You’re on your own and it’s time for you to grow up!”

TWO WITCHES represent Shadow and Light.

Wicked Witch wants her dog or guardian.

Glinda, the Good Witch of the North gives Dorothy the ruby slippers.

Those shoes (ruby slippers) represent another chrism or grace that will see Dorothy through her journey.

Scarecrow= who complains that he doesn’t have a BRAIN. Represents a dialogue with her own intelligence, in which for the first time she has assess her intellectual reality,

Tin Woodman= who has rusted into immobility and who, once lubricated, complains that he needs a heart. In symbolic terms, Dorothy also needs to awaken the sense of love and compassion that lies within.

Cowardly Lion= who is immobilized by fear. The lion lacks courage, which is a function of self-esteem and is related to will and choice.

She can act like a Victim and give in or call upon her guides for help.

Poppies she falls asleep, - some events stay in unconsciousness.

Dorothy’s transition from childhood to adulthood, from Orphan Child to Hero, is going to require not only grace but also a healing of her past, which is accomplished in part I the unconscious state.

Go before Wizard…who tests them, YOU WILL ALWAYS have a test to invoke grace, and you need grace to pass the test.

When stuck in a dark wood or prison, we need to look to the Saboteur, who reminds us that we MUST keep the FAITH and NOT GIVE IN TO OUR FEARS.

She calls on her own, on her journey:

1. Lion - Courage

2. Will - Scarecrow

3. Heart- Tin man

She pours water on Witch and the whole world that had once scared her dissolves, and she sees only safety.

Oz-REPRESENTS the achievement of spiritual power and independence it’s essentially meaningless unless she can bring back home what she has learned and apply it to her everyday life.

Spiritual insight is not an end in itself, but a means to transform our life on earth from mere survival and dominance into compassion and service to others.

Page 141 is where I left off. I am learning so much and all of this from Caroline Myss’s book Sacred Contracts.

  1. This was very interesting to read, Jackie. I have read the whole series of Frank L. Baum books and find them quite amazing…I’m sure I didn’t clue in to all the potential meanings and archetypal themes, but they are rich! You’ve made me want to read them again…I might!

  2. Great psych relate themes. I once wrote paper using Pinocchio as children epic hero myth fitting all stages, leaving, arrogance, apotheosis, maturity, wisdom. The professor gave me F - he said “ridiculous”. I still contend he is the jerk and from this seems you would find legitimacy in my paper from literary and psych view.

  3. You are absolutely amazing! Every word is as exciting as the movie itself which I started watching once a year in the 5o’s when it made its annual TV appearance. You lend a depth of perception that positively tingles each grey cell!

  4. That was so insightful. You can develop it into a thesis for a psychology class. Sweetie your writing is powerful and full of confidence. I know that school is going well.:)

  5. Sage
Sage individuals are most fulfilled by finding the answers to great questions. Naturally intelligent, knowledgeable, and reflective, they demonstrate the value of thinking things through and motivate others to seek the truth. They’re usually excited and challenged by situations and problems that need to be better understood.

Sage organizations often are very successful at developing significant expertise; gathering and analyzing information so that it’s useful to others; and contributing knowledge to almost any situation.

Sage types need to be wary of ivory tower thinking, dogmatism, and coming across as lacking feeling/empathy.

    Subtypes include:

    • Expert/guru : Develops own knowledge and expertise to the highest level
    • Philosopher/contemplative : Uses deep thinking to seek and create clarity
    • Mentor/teacher : Shares wisdom with the world
    • Investigator : Researches and gathers information
    • Analyst : Thinks things through and synthesizes learning
